Upper Room Class

We meet each Sunday morning beginning at 9:45 am in the library of Callaway Hall for worship and study.  (Click here for location diagram.)  Our class is composed of caring and loving singles and couples whose ages range from the 40's through the 90's.  We have a wide variety of talents and interests which we joyously share.  We enjoy our retreats, our picnics, our potluck dinners, our game nights and our boating outings.

At the present our lesson is taught by a few members of the class.  Our classes and discussions are related to daily living and life's experiences using the Uniform Series Adult Lesson Studies as published by Cokesbury.

As a class we share a rich history.  Years ago we started as a class called the Newly Married Class.  At some point later we looked at each other and realized that we were not all married and that for a variety of reasons some of us were single.  So, the name changed to become The Pairs and Spares Class.  Again, as time passed, we found that we were meeting in an upstairs classroom and decided that a more fitting name would be the Upper Room Class.  Now that some of us are older and stairs presented somewhat of a problem we meet downstairs in the Library of Callaway Hall and are known, jokingly,  as the Upper Room Class that meets downstairs.

* * * * *

"When One is Not the Loneliest Number

Esther 7:1-4

BACKGROUND:

The author of the book of Esther is unknown. Most likely the book was written about 460 B.C. The events of Esther take place in Susa, the capital of the Persian Empire. The Jewish people were descendants of those wb& had been exiled to Babylon and had settled in Persia under the rule of King Xerxes.

The Central theme of this lesson is to appreciate how God uses ordinary people, like Esther and us, to accomplish extraordinary things for his purposes.

QUESTIONS:

1.   Does your anger ever spread to those around you, particularly family?

2.   Do we ever act to influence persons of power to help those in need?

3.   Do you have the courage of your convictions?

4.   Are you willing to risk ridicule or danger to help those in need?

5.   Are you willing to sacrifice your comfort or security for the sake of others?
